Glasgow Girls in London: Resist Much, Obey Little
Well what a blast! Reunited with Alison and Lesley in this massive, beautiful and quiet oasis in London. We are showing some older work and some new pieces. My new large canvases are based on a Feminist narrative: the story of sleeping beauty – a new look at the fairy tale through feminist eyes – she appears fast asleep but is still on high alert and Ancestors portrays the idea of feminism through the ages under the one roof.
It was such a treat to show with Lesley Burr and Alison Harper at the beautiful Mile End art pavilion in London this month.
We have been friends since GSA days and the exhibition celebrates 40 years of artist friendship.

With Alison and Lesley in front of Lesley’s work, Mile End Art Pavilion, London
The exhibition comprises over 100 works and there is a Glasgow Girls publication to go with the show. The gallery space is vast -with a full glass wall on one side that looks onto a large pond full of bird life. The paintings take on a quiet calm in this environment and allows our visitors time and space to enjoy the work. We are all showing work that spans a few decades: Lesley is also showing new environmental based work that was made after a recent visit to the artic; Alison’s new work is based on the wonderful proposition – If God were a Woman – and my new work comprises large scale colourful feminist pieces.

Opening night with Alison and Lesley at the Glasgow Girls, resist much, obey little exhibition.
And an introduction by Andrew Wamae ESOP and flowers from the lovely Alex.
Our visitors have been many and varied from family; friends; art colleagues; art enthusiasts, students , buyers and locals . The opening night was great fun: our Dj brought in some lovely vibes; there was the wine; food; ESOP cocktails and wait for it – breast cakes! The evening went in a jiffy with so much chat. I somehow managed 3 margaritas and the cakes were delicious! The venue was packed with wonderful support from family and friends; the staff and students at Esop; many London based artists (including 5 RA’s !) ; the Glasgow boys – Adrian Wiszniewski and Ken Currie ; Sandy Moffat and Colin Greenslade who (together with Sam Ainsley )gave so much of their time to contribute to the GG’s catalogue. It was a fantastic night full of love and support -last but not least a big thank you to our partners Paul, Andrew and Fergus who helped hang the show!
The GG’s were a bit overwhelmed.

The opening night.

Alison, Lesley ( via zoom ) and I gave a talk about our work and the GG’s exhibition to the students and staff at the ESOP www.theessentialschoolofpainting.com
The talk lasted 2 hrs with lots of interesting comments and questions from tutor Dan Coombs and the students. It was great to get a tour around the advanced painting studios before catching the train back to Glasgow.
