Painting
Beaton has explored many themes on humanity and the archetypal female figure but it is the Italian Renaissance artists’ vision that is evident in her new paintings – awash with flowers and fruit, the beauty of the human form and the landscape.
These new canvases pay homage to the great Renaissance masters as if from a parallel universe where non-naturalistic colour portrays subjects fascinating in their ambiguity. The simplicity of their hand gestures – a romanticising of the nature of high Renaissance painting itself – creating an evocative narrative.
Here the landscape and figures are painted from observation, part memory and perceived memory. Beaton’s use of the painted mark is built on nearly 40 years experience and on an appreciation of the aesthetic in paint, colour and form. The language of colours and forms and the elegance and simplicity of draughtsmanship have always remained at the heart of her work.
